An interview with Grammy nominated Wolf Alice: talking Blue Weekend, returning to live performance, and more

Wolf Alice is a band that needs no introduction (but here’s one anyway). For the past decade they’ve showcased their exceptional versatility, first as a duo of frontwoman Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie, then later expanding to form a four-piece with bassist Theo Ellis and drummer Joel Amey. Their music is a marvel to behold, and they are the masters of juxtaposition in an album context: the three track run of ‘Yuk Foo’, ‘Beautifully Unconventional’, and ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ is a fle

Pale Waves’ Heather Baron-Gracie talks recording in lockdown, normalising LGBTQ+ relationships in new single ‘She’s My Religion,’ and more

Heather Baron-Gracie is the lead singer of Pale Waves, an indie rock band that rose to stardom after supporting The 1975 on their North American tour in 2017. They then released their debut EP ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID and album My Mind Makes Noises, with their debut album reaching number eight on the UK Albums Chart. The band’s influences are broad, with Heather’s vocals often resembling Avril Lavigne’s, but having a musical style comparable to eighties acts such as The Cure, Siouxsie and the

Wellerman singer Nathan Evans talks going viral on TikTok and reaching number one over hero Ed Sheeran

If you’ve used TikTok at all during the past two or three weeks, you would have seen the sea shanty craze currently sweeping the platform. Creators on TikTok are currently videoing themselves singing the likes of ‘Leave Her Johnny,’ ‘The Scotsman,’ and ‘The Drunken Sailor,’ with videos reaching hundreds of thousands of views with ease. One TikTok user, Nathan Evans from Scotland, has found success with his rendition of the 19th century whaling song ‘Wellerman,’ as his video currently sits at 11

REVIEW: The Calls – Fall Inside Again

With the release of their EP Fall Inside Again, Leeds trio The Calls combined three previously released tracks with a pair of new ones. You can see the video to ‘I Should’ve Known,’ one of the new tracks, below. The EP’s opener, the two-thirds title track ‘Fall Inside’ is an upbeat start to the album, in spite of vocalist and songwriter Tom Fuller’s characteristically cryptic lyricism. Psychedelic shimmers pepper the track, combining perfectly with the smoothness of bassist Marcell Hasslewood’s

Wild Fields 2020: Highlights from Saturday 12th of September

The first day of Wild Fields, Norfolk’s first socially distanced festival, had an excellent variety of talented artists. Attendees were assigned a 3m by 3m pod for their group of up to six people. These worked very well in terms of social distancing, with similar measures being in place for the second stage and for queuing arrangements at the various food stalls at the event. The level of effort put in to ensure the safety of attendees was remarkable, with hygiene stations placed around the sit

yllwshrk frontman Ian Anderson talks debut album ‘I AM ALADDIN’

yllwshrk (‘yellow shark’) is a unique collective of extremely talented musicians, tied together by frontman and composer Ian Anderson. To my surprise he happened to be in Poland when he answered my call, so even further away than my previous interview– but, I digress. yllwshrk’s debut album I AM ALADDIN, releasing on the 16th of October, is the culmination of hundreds of micro-influences, culminating in a kind of mix of alternative rock, chamber rock and jazz– it’d take hours to list out the gen

Interview from a Distance: A talk with the genre-blending Popcorn Fiend

Popcorn Fiend, real name Michael MacLennan, is a Glasgow-based electronic artist whose debut album Distance is available now. The album is a truly impressive body of work, drawing on a vast array of influences from Queen to Squarepusher to King Crimson, all to illustrate an emotional journey. It was released on the 18th of September, and you can listen to it on Spotify here and Bandcamp here. Who are some of your greatest influences? I mean, music was really important to me growing up, and I r

Why you should play Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

All game series’ change over time, (except for Dragon Quest) with a series like Final Fantasy being the best example, moving away from turn-based combat or ATB in favour of action. Fire Emblem’s changes over the years have been far more subtle, as although there have been numerous changes to how the weapon triangle, magic, and weapon durability works, the series has never left its grid-based layout on its maps. Perhaps the most unique game of the Fire Emblem series, only really competing with F
